OCMF: Hosiery

Most people think of hosiery, or socks, as a non-issue. And, they can be, if you follow one rule. They can also add a lot to your outfit (see the esoteric section at the end).

However, if you don't follow the rules, socks (or shoes) can ruin an outfit. Just imagine: a man in a sharply cut black suit, great shirt and tie, pocket square, he looks great...then, he sits down and out pops his white gym socks--it ruins the whole image.

So, now that we've agreed that we should all pay attention to our socks, let's talk about one simple rule:

  1. Socks should match your pants. That's the most fundamental rule (see esoteric section for possible exceptions). You'll always be safe if you match your pants to your socks, maybe with the socks being a little darker. With navy pants, you can wear black, but not the inverse.
Keep in mind that "match your pants" does not necessarily mean "having the same color as your pants." Two colors match if, when placed next to each other, they blend or "go well" or are simply pleasing to the eye. An exact match is within this category.

Don't wear almost-exact matches--it looks like you tried to match them exactly but couldn't find the same color. Instead, go with a set of socks that complement your pants.

That's pretty much it. It may be useful to note that you'll be most comfortable in natural fiber socks--cotton or wool--instead of nylon or polyester. Natural fibers always keep you cooler. Also, formal socks should almost always be black--pure black, no fancy stuff. But, as with most fashion rules, you can bend this one for a big impression (bending formal attire is usually risky though).

You don't need expensive socks--what's the point? If you live in a cold climate maybe having cashmere socks would be nice; you'll have to pay a little more for those. Other than that, just go to your local department store and get some socks--bring your pants along with you for color comparison.

If you really want to be a stud, your socks should have some color which is above your waist--your tie is a prime candidate. Observe this screenshot of Fred Astaire from "Funny Face." Sorry for the poor quality, but it was the best frame which showed his socks. Notice how his shirt, tie, and socks are all pink. He also does it with blue in a later scene.

Ascot to match the socks...
